Jefferson County Issues Burn Ban as Drought Conditions Worsen Across Southeast Texas
Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick issued a countywide burn ban Monday as drought conditions intensified across Southeast Texas, with the National Drought Monitor classifying most of the region as experiencing moderate to severe drought. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning until further notice. Residents are also asked to conserve water as the Beaumont Water Utilities reports reservoir levels at 61%.
Motiva Port Arthur Refinery Completes $1.4B Upgrade; Now Largest Single-Site Refinery in U.S.
Motiva Enterprises announced Monday the completion of a $1.4 billion upgrade at its Port Arthur refinery, increasing processing capacity to 630,000 barrels per day and cementing its status as the largest single-site refinery in the United States. The upgrade added a new coker unit, expanded hydrogen production, and installed advanced emissions control systems that reduce sulfur dioxide output by 40%.
Beaumont ISD Board Votes to Close Three Elementary Schools Due to Declining Enrollment
The Beaumont ISD Board of Trustees voted 4-3 Monday to close three elementary schools — Pietzsch, Fehl-Price, and Austin — at the end of the current school year due to declining enrollment and aging facilities. Lamar University broke ground Monday on a $45 million Science and Technology Building that will house expanded engineering, computer science, and cybersecurity programs. Brazoria County broke ground Monday on a $26 million new animal shelter and adoption center in Angleton, replacing the severely overcrowded 1988 facility. The new shelter will have kennels for 600 dogs and 300 cats, a full veterinary clinic, a spay/neuter suite, adoption suites, a dog park, and a pet food pantry. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2028.
LyondellBasell Freeport Wins Texas Governor's Environmental Excellence Award
LyondellBasell's Freeport complex was named the winner of the Texas Governor's Environmental Excellence Award Monday for its zero-waste manufacturing initiative and water recycling program, which reduced the facility's freshwater consumption by 38% and diverted 96% of solid waste from landfills in 2025. The award was presented by Governor Greg Abbott at a ceremony in Austin.
Pearland Ranked No. 2 Best Suburb to Live in Texas by Niche; Schools and Safety Lead Rankings
Pearland was ranked the second-best suburb to live in Texas by Niche's 2026 annual rankings, moving up one spot from last year. Brazoria County District Attorney Tom Selleck announced felony charges Monday against an Angleton financial advisor accused of defrauding 42 retirees out of a combined $6.2 million through a Ponzi scheme disguised as a real estate investment fund. The suspect allegedly used investor funds to pay personal expenses including a vacation home in Colorado and a luxury boat. He faces up to 99 years in prison.
