The Beaumont City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to approve a 12% increase in water and sewer rates, the first rate hike in six years, to fund critical repairs to the city's aging water distribution system. City Manager Chris Boone said the increase is necessary to address more than $180 million in deferred maintenance and prevent service disruptions. The new rates take effect June 1.
